Cabinet Maker (Joiner)

Program Description

The Joinery/Cabinet Making trade is a highly rewarding woodworking specialization with emphasis placed on high degrees of accuracy, fit and finish, cost effectiveness and overall craft professionalism.

This 6-month program is an introduction to the Joinery trade. Theory and practice is offered to allow students to build numerous projects including solid wood furniture, cabinets, kitchen cabinets, jigs and fixtures, etc.

A journeyperson joiner working for a shop or operating his or her own company would be expected to build a variety of items such as kitchen cabinets, furniture, shelving units for stores and millwork.

Using his or her skills, the joiner will be required to envision how an item will be constructed, create a detailed shop drawing with a cut list for the item, build and assemble all the components, and then apply the required finishing material.

The Joinery Trade Entry Program prepares students for employment in the joinery trade. The first year Joinery apprenticeship theory will be covered, along with detailed hands-on related shop practicals. This gives the students the opportunity to become proficient in basic woodworking. Successful graduates of the program usually then seek employment as an apprentice. Once they served an apprenticeship they can write a Trades Qualification exam.
