About the Program
The 38 week WIST Pre-Apprenticeship Carpenter General certificate program will equip students who wish to make a career in the construction industry as a General Carpenter, with the basic skills required to secure a position as an apprentice, and to work safely and successfully in the industry. The curriculum provides the student with Basic Level apprentice training, and also provides additional skills designed to increase the student's general level of knowledge about the construction and renovations industry and thus increase their value to prospective employers. In addition, the program incorporates components not found in the Basic Level training, such as job search and communications skills, and training in computer literacy and various computer applications.

Program Objectives
% Select, use and maintain hand and power tools.
% Interpret woodworking terms and nomenclature, production methods and techniques.
% Identify unsafe work areas and apply essential safety procedures.
% Interpret rigging hazards and apply safe rigging and access practices.
% Interpret the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
% Discuss the history of carpentry.
% Select and identify material used in residential and commercial construction.
% Identify various types of residential construction plans and specifications.
% Interpret the Ontario Building Code.
% Interpret basic blueprint drawings and prepare free-hand sketches.
% Apply basic mathematics to solve trade-related problems.
% Apply basic principles of construction layout.
% Perform welding, cutting and brazing operations with standard oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding equipment.
% Describe materials and methods used to construct residential and light commercial buildings.
% Describe materials and methods used to complete the interior of residential and light commercial buildings.
% Describe the relationship between the carpenter and other trades and their respective responsibilities and requirements.
% Recognize older construction materials and practices and how to integrate them with current methods and code requirements.
% Explain the basic structural requirements of buildings, and the principles of controlling air, moisture, thermal and sound transmission in buildings.
% Apply the basics of computer operating systems, file management, Microsoft Word and Excel toward the creation of simple documents and spreadsheets.
% Apply the principles and concepts of CADD toward the creation of simple orthographic drawings in AutoCAD.
% Plan job-search strategies, develop interview skills and apply effective written and interpersonal communication skills.
